As part of a significant reinvestment in public greenspace along the Lake Michigan shoreline, an underperforming high school baseball field in Whiting Park was reimagined. The Mayor authorized the relocation of the ballfield to the central business district, hoping to spur new economic activity for main street merchants.
The resulting development of Oil City Stadium created a home for the Whiting High Oilers, Calumet College, and the Northwest Indiana Oil Men. This award-winning facility hosts baseball games, concerts, festivals, and corporate events throughout the year, activating downtown businesses and attracting private development interests.
