IU Health – Bloomington

Bloomington, IN

In a collaborative effort, Context and the design team crafted a solution informed by the site’s natural features to create a clearly navigable campus experience that accommodates the needs of all user groups for IU Health Bloomington. Through a series of stakeholder meetings and public open house events, Context engaged multiple groups to glean critical information to inform the final solution.

The design features five garden spaces, including a Healing Garden and Therapy Garden. Each space was developed in concert with the building to deliver a solution that was seamless and created a sense of place that is comfortable and familiar to the residents of southern Indiana.

Cultural Campus at Fort Ben

Indianapolis, IN

Context Design collaborated with Arts for Lawrence to turn a dilapidated parking lot into an art experience. This campus stimulates all senses while expressing the history of the park’s surroundings. A military marching cadence intermixes with the melody of musical chords and laughter as children of all ages play on the Musical Swings. Engraved limestone benches march park visitors to the amphitheater that is home to outdoor concerts, children’s theater events, and celebrations of special occasions. A sloped lawn, which is bisected with crisscrossing walks, invites outdoor play and lawn seating and creates opportunities for outdoor programmed events. Artist rooms provide quiet space for creating and selling beautiful creations.

The impact of this project on Fort Ben and the Lawrence community has been significant, and the flexibility of the spaces provide endless opportunity for the continued creation of art.

Brownsburg High School Stadium

Brownsburg, IN

C.F. Roark Stadium in Brownsburg was one of Context Design’s earliest commissions in 1998. At that time, ADA compliance shortfalls and bleacher safety issues required attention as the relatively modest-sized school was beginning to experience growth. Fast forward 25 years. The facility has undergone multiple rounds of major reinvestment with press box, lighting, synthetic turf conversion, spectator circulation, fencing and gate control, and restroom amenities.

Rather unique in the high school market, Brownsburg’s football field is not surrounded by a paved track. That allows bleachers to reside very close to the playing field, amplifying crowd noise/influence in a near collegiate-like atmosphere.

Nickel Plate District

Fishers, IN

Context was commissioned by the Town of Fishers to develop a transformative, vibrant “downtown district” of restaurants, retail, personal service businesses, co-working space, entertainment venues, and municipal services in an identifiable core. Now 12 years since the Vision Plan and Form-based Code were authored and the first public-private partnership agreement was inked, the Nickel Plate District has outpaced even the most ambitious forecasts, achieving at its 7-year mark what economic models predicted would take 15 years or more to achieve. More than $800m of private-sector reinvestment has been leveraged through following the “playbook” of density, placemaking, connectivity, and scale authored by Context Design alongside city leaders and elected officials.

North Hall

Indianapolis, IN

Context Design led site design on this 700 room, LEED Silver tower, the first new traditional residence hall on campus since IUPUI’s inception in 2014. The project was delivered in a fast-track methodology via a 6-month design schedule and 15-month build.

Placement of the building for this project was an exciting challenge. The parcel was limited in size and nestled into a compact urban context. 360-degree access for move-in, move-out, and emergency vehicle use constrained the limits of a sizeable architectural footprint.

The design solution includes an urban streetscape that opens onto a modern and lushly planted plaza, leading students and visitors to the facility’s main entry. Students enjoy a large, protected courtyard that facilitates student life events while maintaining an intimate garden-like atmosphere suitable for individual study, mingling, and small-group socializing.

IU Health Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center

Carmel, IN

This addition to the IU Health North Hospital Campus in Carmel, Indiana had a unique set of design requirements due to the unique needs of the families being served. This two-phase project impacted the entire campus to make room for the Cancer Center wing building expansion. New parking was developed on the north side of the site and existing drop off sequences for the Emergency Department, and the OB wing were modified. New site circulation and parking that responded to the overall campus vision while keeping the patient needs at the forefront resulted in a client-focused solution. Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall

Bloomington, IN

Context was commissioned to collaborate with CSO Architects and SmithGroup to develop a cohesive site design

This new civic space links the Assembly Hall building renovations to the core of campus in response.  Balancing amenities for emergency, security, maintenance, athlete, and spectator uses during peak and off-peak times were the primary design responsibilities for Context.

Pre-design site visits, overlays of campus master planning efforts, and detailed design collaboration with the University resulted in a progressive and universally accessible experience from academic campus to game day events, all at the doorstep of the iconic Assembly Hall.

On the ground plane, Context integrated key pedestrian hardscape, site furnishing, and plant materials that aid in achieving the project’s LEED goals.  Responding to the natural landform’s bedrock depths, existing terrain, and adjacent campus spaces, the landscape evolved into a subtle, yet grand statement with minimal construction efforts and cost impacts.

Fishers Central Green

Fishers, IN

Context led site design for the new civic space south of City Hall. Working diligently with the City of Fishers the Context Design the space to build cohesion between the Central Green and the flanking Depot at Nickel Plate & Switch mixed-use developments.

The site design evolved with economic and community development criteria in mind. Permeable pavements, native plant materials, and LED lighting are among the green infrastructure elements incorporated. Shared below-grade detention in the central lawn panel further incentivized the adjacent mixed-use developments. Seating areas with USB charging receptacles, tree canopy-covered outdoor rooms, European-inspired flush plaza areas, an activated fountain in Liberty Plaza, and a common green friendly to all are just the beginnings of what makes this civic space beat in the heart of Fishers’ Municipal Complex.

Honors College

West Lafayette, IN

The landscape architects at Context Design worked closely with the architect to ensure a large grove of trees present on the site was maintained and protected throughout the design and construction processes. Situating the Honors College and its residences in this mature landscape setting provides an immediate feel of longevity and history despite it’s completion in 2016.

The Honors College is the first residence hall on Purdue’s campus to integrate academic spaces within a residential setting. To support this dual use, the site features an outdoor plaza with a fire pit, an open lawn for recreation and programs, and outdoor dining spaces.

As one unique detail of this project, the Dean of the Honors College was particularly passionate about the planting palette. Significant research went into plant selections that were edible, including many varieties appropriate for use in teas and medicinal remedies.

The National Desert Shield and Desert Storm War Memorial

Washington, D.C.

Our team had the privilege of collaborating closely with the CSO and the National Desert Storm Memorial Association to develop the initial concept for the National Desert Storm Memorial in Washington D.C. in 2016.

The original design featured a sand wall ascending alongside a landform, forming a sweeping left hook. This left hook symbolizes the strategic military tactic employed by the U.S.-led coalition forces, originating from Saudi Arabia, to outflank Iraqi troops and advance into Kuwait and southern Iraq. This conceptual idea served as the foundation to garner initial support and approval, and it continues to be the guiding vision for the memorial’s ongoing development.

Whiteland High School Stadium

Whitestown, IN

Warriors Stadium had grown outdated and beyond code compliance when Context Design was brought on board in 2014 to envision an updated football, soccer, track, and bleacher redevelopment. Additionally, CSO Architects worked to reimagine an existing locker room building into a multi-functional outbuilding capable of large group instruction, ticketing, and hospitality functions.

The track and field had previously been constructed on an aggressive cross slope pitched eastward for drainage purposes. The track was non-compliant with IHSAA standards. Context Design leveled grade across the facility and programmed detention below the playing field to accommodate the stormwater run-off function for both the stadium investment and a future auditorium addition.
